We booked our tickets online in advance for both The Colosseum and The Vatican and I can not tell you how smug we felt at 9:30 in the morning strolling past the already gigantic queue at The Colosseum straight through security and into the entrance. Not only did we not have to queue but it was still pretty quiet when we got inside and believe me Rome is not a quiet place!
The one piece of advice I wish we had been given would have been…BRING A PACKED LUNCH. Oh my, yes, the Vatican museums are going to take you an entire day…yes even if you do arrive at 9:00am. There is just so much to see, not only the antiquities and buildings, but the views back over the river of Rome were some of my favourites.
We ate at a different restaurant every evening and lunch at the vatican aside we did not have a bad meal. We did however have such a good meal that we couldn’t come home without one last visit; so on our last day went back for round two and had totally different dishes but the same great experience.
Truly a hidden gem that we couldn’t thank the concierge at our hotel enough for recommending. Ai Tre Scalini. And as such I pass it on to you, fun and chilled, a completely local tourist-free, pizza-free modern Roman vibe...pure Italian perfection.
